Agricultural pest control is the discipline where stewardship bites hardest. Rodenticide use in and around an open, wildlife-rich environment carries real risk to non-target species (owls, raptors and farm animals) and the assurance schemes your buyers impose have tightened accordingly. Doing this properly is as much ecology as pest control.

Stewardship is not optional here

CRRU stewardship governs how and where rodenticide may be used, and farm assurance schemes audit against it. Permanent baiting is no longer defensible, which puts monitoring, proofing and habitat management at the centre of the programme.

Non-target wildlife is the real exposure

Barn owls and raptors hunt the same rodents you are controlling. Secondary poisoning is both an ecological harm and an assurance failure, so bait placement, product choice and carcass searching all have to be deliberate.

Stores are the pressure point

Grain stores, feed bins and straw stacks concentrate food and shelter in one place. Contamination there is a direct financial loss and, for anything entering the food chain, a compliance problem too.

The perimeter is the countryside

Unlike a sealed commercial building, a farm has continuous ingress pressure from surrounding land. Control is about managing pressure at the buildings that matter rather than attempting to exclude an open site.

Can you control rodents without risking owls and raptors?

That is the objective of a properly stewarded programme. Monitoring, proofing, habitat management and targeted, time-limited baiting with carcass searching are how secondary poisoning is avoided, and CRRU stewardship exists precisely to enforce it.
