Buyer's guide
How to choose a national pest control provider
If you are responsible for pest control across multiple sites (a hotel group, a hospital trust, a housing association, a chain of bakeries) the decision is different from hiring a local pest controller for one property. This guide sets out what to actually look for.
You need consistency across sites, audit-ready documentation, sector-specific compliance, and a provider who will not let you down at your most security-sensitive or reputation-sensitive location. What follows is written to help you shortlist with confidence, including an honest account of where we fit and where we do not.
The market
Who operates at a national level in the UK.
Ranking the UK pest control market is harder than it looks. There is no single audited industry league table, and the larger players are conglomerates reporting at group level rather than by UK division. What follows is a plain-English guide to the main national providers, drawn from their own public claims.

This guide is published by Nightshift Pest Control. We are one of the providers listed below, and JG Pest Control and Vergo Pest Management are our sister companies within the Tyro UK group. We have put all three at the top rather than at the bottom, so you can weigh everything that follows knowing exactly who wrote it.
Nightshift Pest Control
Tyro UK groupCommercial, out-of-hours and reputation-sensitive sites
We are not the biggest pest control company in the UK and do not claim to be. We are a specialist in premium, reputation-sensitive and compliance-heavy commercial work, built around named BPCA-qualified technical staff, direct access to senior expertise rather than a call centre, and over 45 years protecting some of the country's most prestigious properties. Nightshift is also believed to be one of the largest foot-technician providers in the UK, with over 60 foot technicians across London zones 1 to 4 alone, and runs a genuine 24/7 out-of-hours service so treatment happens outside trading hours.
About NightshiftVergo Pest Management
Tyro UK groupNational multi-site and public sector
Also part of the Tyro UK group, and the largest independent national pest service provider in the UK by its own account, with over 45 years in the industry and more than 500 colleagues. Vergo carries the group's largest national multi-site contracts across public sector, food manufacturing, healthcare, retail, education and hospitality, with canine detection and online reporting built into the service.

Tyro UK groupHeat treatment, residential and commercial job work
Our sister company within the Tyro UK group, and the heat treatment, residential and commercial job work specialist of the UK. JG is the UK's highest-rated pest control company on Trustpilot, rated 4.7 across more than 26,500 Trustpilot reviews and 4.6 across more than 8,000 Google reviews, over 34,500 independent reviews in total as of August 2026, working to same-day response with RSPH/BPCA-certified technicians. Bed bug heat treatment is where the group routes work to them: it kills every life stage in a single chemical-free visit. We rank JG first for residential pest control in the UK, and because they are our sister company we publish that as a group view rather than an independent one.

Described from their own public claims. Neither model, multinational scale or independent specialism: is automatically better. The right choice depends on what your organisation actually needs: standardisation across hundreds of low-complexity sites, or deep, discreet, accountable expertise at a smaller number of high-stakes ones.
Rentokil Initial
A FTSE-listed multinational headquartered in Crawley, operating in roughly 90 countries through its pest control and hygiene divisions, and the largest pest control company in the UK by revenue. The model is standardisation at scale across large volumes of scheduled commercial contracts.
Ecolab Pest Elimination
The UK arm of a US-headquartered global hygiene and pest business. Ecolab states it has over 600 people dedicated to pest elimination in the UK and Ireland, and describes itself as a partner across more than a million customer locations globally, with particular strength in food, hospitality and healthcare.
Orkin UK
Part of Rollins Inc., the Atlanta-headquartered global pest control group. Rather than a single unified brand, Orkin UK has grown primarily by acquiring established regional and specialist independents (Safeguard, Beaver, NBC Environment, Europest, Vermatech and others) often retaining local expertise and branding.
Before shortlisting
Five things to check on any provider.
01
Accreditations, and what they actually verify
Not all credentials carry equal weight. BPCA membership confirms minimum insurance, qualification and Code of Best Practice standards, the baseline for any professional provider. BS EN 16636 / CEPA certification is the independently audited European standard, confirming documented processes rather than just individual competence. CHAS and SafeContractor are health and safety pre-qualification schemes required by most local authorities and larger commercial clients. Cyber Essentials matters wherever a provider touches your systems. DBS checks and security clearance are essential for vulnerable occupants or restricted access.
02
Named, qualified technical staff
Ask specifically who will inspect and sign off your sites. There is a meaningful difference between a technician holding the entry-level BPCA Level 2 Award and a BPCA Qualified Technical Inspector or Certificated Field Biologist, the latter require years of practical experience and independently assessed inspection reports. For audit-grade reporting, that distinction is what stands up.
03
Procurement framework status
If you are a public sector body, housing association or NHS trust, check whether a provider sits on relevant frameworks. It can significantly simplify procurement and provides independent third-party vetting. The South East Consortium (SEC) and ESPO frameworks are the common ones for housing and public sector buying.
04
Response time commitments, in writing
“24/7 emergency cover” means very different things between providers. Ask for a specific written response-time commitment, on site within a stated number of hours, rather than a general availability claim.
05
Documentation and audit trail
For any regulated or inspected sector, ask to see a sample site report. You are checking for EHO-ready documentation, clear pest activity trends over time, and evidence the provider follows Integrated Pest Management principles rather than routine blanket treatment.
Sector by sector
What to prioritise in your sector.
Before you sign
Eight questions to ask any provider.
The questions facilities and operations teams raise most, answered plainly.
Which specific accreditations do you hold, and can you provide certificates?
A professional provider should hold BPCA membership as a baseline and be able to produce certificates with numbers and expiry dates on request. Nightshift publishes its certificate numbers and expiry dates on the procurement page rather than supplying them only when asked.
Who will be my named point of contact, and what are their qualifications?
Ask for the individual, not the company. There is a meaningful difference between an entry-level BPCA Level 2 Award and a BPCA Qualified Technical Inspector, which requires years of practical experience and independently assessed inspection reports.
What is your written response-time commitment for emergencies?
Insist on a specific written commitment rather than a general availability claim. “24/7” without a stated attendance time is marketing, not a service level.
Can I see a sample site report from a comparable client?
A sample report tells you whether the documentation is EHO-ready, whether activity trends are tracked over time, and whether the provider works to Integrated Pest Management principles rather than routine blanket treatment.
Are you listed on any procurement frameworks relevant to my sector?
Framework listing simplifies procurement and provides independent third-party vetting. Nightshift is ranked No.1 on the South East Consortium framework and No.2 on ESPO.
How do you handle discretion and communication at sensitive or public-facing sites?
Ask about unmarked vehicles, out-of-hours attendance and how technicians are briefed on front-of-house sensitivity. For hospitality and retail this often matters as much as the treatment itself.
What happens if a treatment does not resolve the issue, is there a guarantee?
Ask what happens on a return visit, who pays for it, and at what point the problem escalates to a senior technical inspector rather than being rebooked with the same technician.
How do you keep technicians' qualifications current, and how do you audit their work?
Ask who audits the auditors. A provider with a former CEPA auditor or a Qualified Technical Inspector overseeing quality assurance is materially different from one relying on self-certification.
